J2: Rise of the Dragons is the eightieth episode of Jackie Chan Adventures.

Synopsis[]

In the future, Jade has been placed in charge of Section 13, but is forced to flee into the past when her present is threatened by Drago, the son of Shendu, who has devised a way to resurrect his father in the future.

Plot[]

As San Francisco prepares to celebrate the Chinese New Year, Uncle leads Jackie through a junkyard on the other side of town with his experimental chi detector, which has picked up a disturbing source of dark chi. Unsurprisingly, Jade is revealed to have tagged along. Suddenly, Uncle's chi detector flies off the chart as a green flash of light appears and a mysterious woman emerges out of nowhere. She frantically exclaims that she's late before proceeding to tell them that Jade needs to get away from the site. Jackie bluntly asks the woman what she wants with Jade, upon which she draws his attention to the looming figure watching them from above, once again setting off Uncle's chi detector, but is swiftly repelled when the woman suddenly blasts him away with an energy beam from her palm. She continues to insist that Jade leave with her, but Jackie demands answers. The woman uses martial arts against him, easily outclassing him. She then disappears with Jade in a cloud of green smoke. Uncle sniffs the smoke and determines that the woman is using good chi magic, but Jackie remains skeptical.

Jade quickly discovers that her kidnapper possesses intimate knowledge on her. When pressed for answers, the stranger reveals herself to be Jade from the future. Jade's future self proceeds to hail a cab and promises to explain everything on the journey. Commandeering an ice cream truck, Jackie follows them in pursuit. In the back of the cab, Jade's future self explains that in her present, she is the head of Section 13, having succeeded Captain Black, who has in turn been placed in charge of Section 14 on the East Coast. Suddenly, something crashes onto the roof of the cab, slicing it open with its scaly claws, revealing itself to be the same figure from the junkyard. Jade's future self explains that the individual pursuing them is Shendu's son, Drago. Future Jade attempts to repel him again using her magic blast, which is revealed to be the Dragon Talisman that she had brought back from the future. As Drago proceeds to unleash his fiery breath, the pair leap from the cab, whereupon Future Jade loses her grip of the talisman, allowing Drago to burn it to a cinder.

Defenseless, the duo hide in a warehouse containing the parade floats, banners and fireworks for the Chinese New Year celebrations. Hiding behind a dragon's head, Jade instructs her future self to distract Drago so she can ambush him from behind, but Future Jade infers that if Drago were to eliminate her past self, she would no longer exist in the future, and there would be no one to stop Drago. The pair instead commandeer the dragon float, using its mechanical tail to slap Drago into a set of gongs, alerting Jackie, who had successfully tracked them to the site. Jackie's timely arrival appears to please Drago, who tells him that his father sends his best before proceeding to unleash his fiery breath. Jackie makes the mistake of fleeing amongst a crate of fireworks, which Drago ignites before bidding the three farewell. With some quick thinking, Future Jade is able to pluck Jackie from danger before the three manage to escape the warehouse. When Jackie asks Jade to explain, both Jade and her future self respond, and he quickly deduces the identity of his niece's kidnapper.

Future Jade subsequently explains to Jackie and her past self that she did not intend to involve either of them, nor for Drago to show up. Jackie presses Future Jade for answers, asking her why she travelled back in time to begin with, but before she can answer, Present Jade interjects with her own theory, deducing that she has travelled back in time to stop Drago from wiping her out of existence in the past in order to prevent her from growing up and becoming her future self. However, Jackie debunks her theory by reminding her that Drago left the warehouse without finishing any of them off. Further pressed for answers, Future Jade reveals that it was actually Drago that followed her into the past, rather than vice versa. She proceeds to explain that when she was placed in charge of Section 13, Drago became number one on their most wanted list. In light of this new threat, she managed to convince Jackie and Uncle to become the agency's official consultants on magic, much to the dismay of Present Jackie, who is shocked that he will seemingly never leave Section 13 and live out a normal live. Regardless, both Future Jackie and Future Uncle were unable to anticipate Drago's next move. Having discovered one of his father's ancient spells, Drago unleashed an army of dragon minions and seized Section 13.

With Section 13 lost, Future Jade concluded that the only way to save the future was to change the past. After evading Drago's forces, she used one of Uncle's spells to open a time portal, effectively allowing her to travel to the past. Having caught wise to her plan, however, Drago pursued her through the portal, intending to prevent her from changing the past. When Present Jackie asks her what changes Drago is attempting to prevent her from making, Future Jade reveals that he is attempting to stop her from preventing the resurrection of his father, Shendu, in the future. She explains that the key to Shendu's resurrection is a set of Dragon's Teeth, which are buried somewhere in the city. Future Jade infers that if she can destroy the teeth by midnight, she can effectively prevent Shendu's resurrection in the future. When asked by her past self why the teeth must be destroyed before midnight, Future Jade reveals that Shendu is scheduled to be resurrected at the stroke of Chinese New Year, and that the captive Jackie and Uncle from her present are to be Shendu's first meal, linearly in time at midnight.

Meanwhile, Uncle has been tracking dark chi across the city with his chi detector, eventually arriving at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge where he unearths a dragon shrine containing the teeth. Before he can examine the teeth any further, however, his chi detector once again flies off the chart as Drago emerges to confront him before confiscating the teeth. After commandeering a pair of scooters, the three arrive at the location of the shrine, only to discover that the teeth are missing. They find Uncle suspended from a bridge, hanging upside down. Drago reveals himself, holding a vial containing the teeth whilst demanding that Future Jade provide him the portal spell required to return to the future, threatening to take Uncle "bungee jumping without a bungee". Whilst Jackie scales the bridge to save Uncle, Future Jade proceeds to fight Drago, but is eventually bested by the young dragon. Before Drago can finish her off with his fiery breath, however, Present Jade jumps in to save her, effectively knocking the vial containing the teeth out of his hand for Future Jade to secure. However, midnight has already arrived, and in the future, Shendu returns to his physical form, ready to devour Future Jackie and Future Uncle. Thinking alike, the two Jades mock Drago, calling him "the tooth fairy" and "a gecko with zits", enraging him enough to release a breath of fire, to which Present Jade then throws the teeth in its path, destroying them. This simultaneously destroys them in the future, reducing Shendu back to stone. More enraged than ever, Drago charges at the two Jades, only to be blasted away by Uncle, who asserts his belief that "magic must defeat magic" before wondering how the teeth had vanished. Future Jade explains that a "dragon's fire breath is magic, duh", to which Uncle asks "who is smarty-pants, good chi magic know-it-all who looks like Jade?", until it finally begins to dawn on him.

Back at Section 13, a muzzled Drago has been imprisoned, but emphatically vows that the dragons will rise again. Future Jade prepares to return home, bidding farewell to Jackie, Uncle and her past self. Present Jade pleads with her future self not to leave, but eventually realizes that "hanging around with myself is a little weird". When asked by Uncle whether his future self allows her to use his spells, Future Jade equivocates that he mellows out as he ages. As a parting gift, she offers her past self some advice on an upcoming pop quiz at school. After giving his thanks, Jackie confesses to Future Jade that he is proud of who she turned out to be as she proceeds to leave through the portal, only for Future Jade to reply that she owes who she turned out to be to one person: him.

Trivia[]

  • Both the title and premise of this episode reference the 2003 Terminator film T3: Rise of the Machines. At the beginning of the episode, Future Jade's arrival into the present clearly parodies the arrival of the T-800 from the future at the beginning of each of the franchise's first three films.
