Deja Vu is the seventy-ninth episode of Jackie Chan Adventures.

Synopsis[]

Hoping to rectify his past defeats, Daolon Wong searches for the Déjà Vu Stone, a magical artifact capable of altering one's past. Jackie is also flung into the past in pursuit of Wong, and contemplates rectifying one of his own past decisions.

Plot[]

Having learned that Daolon Wong has been released from prison for "good behavior", Jackie and Uncle set out to track his whereabouts, leading them to a temple in the far east. Uncle deduces that Wong seeks to locate the Déjà Vu Stone, which can allow a user to relive one or more of their past experiences and alter them accordingly. Should Wong successfully retrieve it, he would be able to alter the past and re-obtain his powers. The pair come upon a shadow, who they initially believe to be Wong, only to quickly realize it is Jade, who has already retrieved the stone.

As usual, Jackie is not thrilled with Jade being there, but she attempts to convince him that he needs her because "she's helped saved the day seventy-two times, the world half a dozen times and his butt more times than she cares to count," to which Jackie retorts that "she has made a mess of things more times than he cares to count." Suddenly, Daolon Wong emerges from the shadows and snatches the stone from Jade before proceeding to activate it. Jackie attempts to stop him, managing to kick it out of his hand as they both disappear in a flash of light along with the stone.

Uncle conjures a locator spell to determine Jackie's whereabouts in his past. Meanwhile, Jackie awakens in an eerily familiar windmill in Holland before being approached by a hostile Tohru, who demands "the talisman" from him. When Tohru proceeds to attack him, Jackie realizes he's been flung back into his past, specifically the time he first discovered the Dog Talisman. Once again, Jackie is forced to climb the windmill's blades in order to evade Tohru, but unlike the first time, Tohru manages to grab Jackie just as the former loses his grip of the rotor blades before collapsing out the window onto Jackie. Uncle explains to Jade that when one revisits the past, one risks changing its outcome. Just as Tohru is preparing to finish off his future ally, Uncle summons a portal that effectively pulls Jackie out of the scene, although Uncle explains that portal magic merely serves as a quick escape, explaining that the only way for Jackie to return to the present is by locating the Déjà Vu Stone, which appears to have been lost to another fragment of the past, along with Daolon Wong himself. Uncle hopes that by summoning new portals for Jackie, he will eventually run into Wong and locate the stone.

Jackie emerges from the portal, this time finding himself atop a train in Turkey after first discovering the Sheep Talisman. Just like the first time, the Dark Hand emerge in an attack helicopter before proceeding to launch missiles upon the bridge ahead of the train's path, destroying it. Once again, Jackie desperately attempts to jump the freight cars in time, only to miss his target by a few inches and falls into the ravine below. Fortunately, he falls into another of Uncle's portals, this time emerging in a wheelchair with a broken leg before encountering a past version Jade sometime after first discovering the Rat Talisman. Jackie scolds her, expressing his frustration over the trouble she has caused, only to be reminded that this version of Jade has no knowledge of the Deja Vu Stone (nor of Daolon Wong) when she instead acknowledges her role in causing him to slip and break his leg. However, the present Jade overhears Jackie and begins to question whether she truly is as helpful as she previously thought. Suddenly, Jackie's wheelchair is pushed down the hill by Jade's animated Gnomekop figure, but is quickly saved by yet another of Uncle's portals, this time emerging high up in the Himalayas after first discovering the Horse Talisman, being perused by the Dark Hand. Just like the first time, an avalanche is unleashed and washes away the four Enforcers whilst Jackie parachutes into another portal, this time emerging in Mexico after first discovering the Ox Talisman. Tied up and anchored to a plane, Jackie pleads with Jade not to board said plane, which she does so anyway, further solidifying Jackie's earlier point as the plane takes off with him dangling in terror.

After several more jumps, Jackie finds himself in Tokyo battling the Mountain Demon, Po Kong. Resorting to desperate measures, Uncle applies a mega dose of garlic to his spell in order to speed the portal transition, inferring that there is a great risk in doing so whilst acknowledging their absence of a better alternative as Jackie is mere moments away from getting eaten by Po Kong. As Uncle had feared, the enhanced spell causes Jackie to bounce against the walls of time, causing acceleration through each of his bad experiences, exclaiming "bad day" all the way. It also cycles through Uncle's "one more thing" phrases, Jade's "duh" and "t'ch" phrases and Jackie's "ow" phrases, making their present selves very nauseous. However, Jackie is flung to safety after nearly getting eaten by Culebra Gigante.

In the next portal, Uncle and Jade discover Daolon Wong, only to inspect that he does not have the Déjà Vu Stone, inferring that his struggle with Jackie must have caused the stone itself to have become randomly lost within one of their other past experiences, effectively stranding Wong. When Jackie emerged from the portal, he sheepishly bid hello to Wong before quickly jumping back in, but the latter managed to prevent the portal from sealing by keeping it open with his finger.

Jackie emerges at the clock tower in Bavaria where he first discovered the Pig Talisman. Just like the first time, Jade draws his attention to the "oinker at twelve o'clock" which originally held the talisman in its hat, but now holds the Déjà Vu Stone which is sitting in between its cymbals. Jade's inadvertent assistance affirms to her present self that she is helpful after all. Jackie's progress is hindered when Hak Foo and Tohru arrive on cue, but a Dog Talisman-powered Uncle manages to fend them off long enough for Jackie to climb his way up. However, Daolon Wong is revealed to have snuck his way in, proceeding to make his way to the stone.

Jackie manages to get to it first and called upon the stone to take him back to the beginning. Wong clings onto him as they are both transported to Uncle's shop. However, it soon becomes apparent to Jackie that he is still lost in time after tripping over his niece's luggage from the day she first arrived after Jackie had returned home from Bavaria with a shield embedded with the Rooster Talisman. Right on cue, Finn, Chow and Ratso enter the store to inquire about the shield, only for Jackie to tell them that Wong has it. Wong pleads his innocence to his future warriors, but they do not recognize him and proceed to drag him off. With the Déjà Vu Stone safely in his possession, Jackie prepares to return to the present, but not before using the opportunity to send Jade back to her parents so she would never have accompanied him on his adventures in the first place. However, when Jackie is suddenly struck with the memories in which Jade actually saved him in instances of genuine heroism, he quickly changes his mind before proceeding to return to the present. Upon returning, Jade embraces her uncle for finally affirming that he does need her, to which Jackie admittedly remarks that she has saved his life a time or two.

Notable Quotes[]

Past Hak Foo: (upon seeing Daolon Wong) Who is that?
Past Jade: And what is this stone you all keep jabbering about?

Uncle: Can you believe dark wizard was released from jail for good behavior?!
Jackie: Uh, I do not think the justice system is prepared to comprehend crimes of magic, Uncle.

Jade: (after seeing herself as Queen of the Shadowkhan) I couldn’t help it! I was possessed!
Uncle: Did Uncle ask you to tattoo demon face on to your leg? No? You do not see Uncle walking around being evil, do you?
Jade: Uh, Unc? (She points while giving Uncle a knowing grin, and Uncle sees his chi vampire self facing off against Jackie)
Uncle: (to Jade, now realizing what she meant) Uncle could not help it. Was victim of chi vampire.

Uncle: That will teach foolish Tohru to mess with Uncle when he is powered by Immortality Talisman. Oh, do not tell faithful apprentice Uncle said that.

Finn: You're Jackie Chan, the archaeologist?
Jackie: I bet you were looking for the shield that I brought from Bavaria.
Finn: We're looking for... how did you know?
Jackie: He has it. (Finn looks at Daolon Wong when Jackie was pointing at him)
Daolon Wong: Chan is lying! Do you not recognize your master?!
Finn: The only master we have is Big V!
Chow: And he's gonna want to hear all about where you stashed this shield.

Trivia[]

  • Jade stating that she has "helped save the day 72 times" and "the world half a dozen times" is in reference to this being the 79th episode of the series preceded by 78 (72+6) episodes.
  • John DiMaggio was given a voice line for Past Hak Foo when Jackie teleports back to the time The Dog and Piggy Show takes place. This would be interesting to note as Hak Foo was previously voiced by Jim Cummings during that time.
  • When Jackie returns to parts of his past, his condition is also affected the same when that time took place, such as having the injury on his leg, being turned into stone, and having powers to remove talismans from Shendu. This would be unusual for Wong's case as why his magic powers (or anything in his possession) was not with him when he landed in a specific part of his own past.
