"Ah, green; the color of jade!"
— Bartholomew Chang

Bartholomew Chang is a Taiwanese billionaire, as well as an international philanthropist and criminal mastermind. Additionally, Chang is the arch-nemesis of the J-Team and the leader of the Chang Gang.

History[]

At some point, Chang lost his right hand in an iron fist competition, and from then on opted to wear a prosthetic hand in its place, his favorite one being made of jade, a material he held an obsession with. He began collecting jade by both legal and illegal means, the latter of which included stealing priceless museum artifacts. As he maintained a venerable public face, the authorities couldn't investigate or arrest him without proof of criminal activity.

Chang gradually built his criminal empire through a series martial arts tournaments (disguised as charity events) held on his island fortress to recruit hired muscle, whilst also exploiting the guest transportation as a means of smuggling stolen jade onto the island. During one such tournament, the J-Team, enlisted by Captain Black of Section 13, infiltrated the event and competed to get an inside on where the stolen jade was being stored. Only one of the four J-Team members managed to win against their respective competitors. Later that evening, Chang gave the four winners a personal tour of his island facilities, which he claimed to be all for charity. Before Chang could lead the winners any further, however, Jackie Chan inadvertently crashed in. When questioned by Chang on his intrusion, Jackie confessed that he was searching for his niece Jade. Mistaking the niece for the stone, Chang deduced that Jackie was there to locate his stolen jade and ordered his men to attack. After regrouping, the J-Team managed to uncover a stockroom bearing the stolen jade whilst successfully neutralizing their opponents in a "re-match". When Chang called for reinforcements, the charity workers (revealed to be henchmen in disguise) arrived alongside the sumo contestants, the latter of which humbled themselves before Tohru for his earlier victory and offered to assist the J-Team by evening the odds. Amidst the fighting, Chang fled the scene and replaced his jade hand prosthetic with a finger-tipped bladed one. After a brief skirmish, Chang was defeated and sent to jail.

Handless Jade Statue

Seeking revenge, Chang collaborated with a Dark Chi Wizard named Yip to create magical duplicates of the entire J-Team (including Jade and Paco). Chang even had a clone of himself to carry out his prison sentence on his behalf. Chang's escape would not be exposed until Captain Black and Jackie conducted a prison interview with "Chang", whereupon Jackie noticed the clone possessed Chang's missing right hand. Chang subsequently ordered the "J-Clones" to conduct thefts on jade sculptures to frame each of their non-clone counterparts whilst simultaneously reclaiming his stolen collection of jade. When the J-Team eventually learned that Chang was operating from his island fortress, they arrived to confront him and his J-Clones. Meanwhile, Uncle managed to determine that the clones themselves were not evil, but were rather inflicted with a spell to make them so. After Tohru performed a spell that awakened the dormant good personalities within the clones, they subsequently joined forces with their non-clone counterparts against their former master. Once again, Chang was apprehended and sent to jail as well as Yip.

Whilst serving his sentence in prison, Chang managed to recruit an elite team comprised of non-clone counterparts of the J-Team, dubbing them the Chang Gang, who successfully managed to break him out of prison. Once again set on reclaiming his stolen jade, Chang accompanied his team to the museum of natural history, only to be met with the J-Team. Whilst initially proving victorious over the Chang Gang, the J-Team began to transform into toddlers due to a spell cast earlier by Jade that was intended to grant her authority over them, allowing Chang and his team to continue their thefts without resistance. When the "J-Tots" attempted to disrupt Chang's departure from the country with the stolen jade, the latter ordered his team to eliminate his enemies for good. Suddenly, Jade showed up and cast the same spell (this time with no delay after remembering to add garlic) on Chang and his team, effectively evening the odds. Once again, the J-Team bested their Chang Gang counterparts, yet even as a toddler, Chang himself still proved very dangerous and fought Jade with his fierce finger-tipped bladed hand prosthetic. After giving him an ultra wedgie, Chang was forced to surrender. He and his gang were then sent off to juvenile detention.

Bartholomew Chang's Prosthetic Hands

Chang possessed an assortment of prosthetic hands to suit his various needs

Chang is a criminal mastermind and businessman. He typically uses his henchmen to take care of hostile opposition. However, it is only when forced into personal combat that he proves to be an able fighter. For this purpose, Chang keeps a collection of metal prosthetic hands fitted with claws and blades, which he can easily snap onto the wrist of his amputated hand.

Trivia[]

  • He bears a strong resemblance to Mr. Han, the antagonist from the 1973 Bruce Lee film Enter the Dragon, which followed the same plot as his debut episode. This includes the fact that both have prosthetic hands and recruit new talent through a martial arts tournament held on an island fortress.
  • Additionally, he bears some similarities with Dr. Julius No, the titular antagonist of the 1962 film Dr. No, the first installment of the James Bond film series. Both have prosthetic hands and run illegal, underground empires. Both are also East Asian (with Dr. No being Chinese).
  • A running joke in each of the episodes dealing with Chang is that whenever the word "jade" is mentioned, Jade pops in and the others have to correct her: "The stone, not the niece", or even vice versa.
